After graduation I joined the US Navy and was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. One year later I was joined by my brother Tom Mackay (DCHS 62) and we served together until my discharge. I returned to Duluth to try and figure out what I wanted to be. In 1965 I married Mary Anne Behning (DCHS 63) and joined the US Coast Guard I then spent over twenty years in the Coast Guard. I spent most of my career on larger Cutters. I had the good fortune to serve on the CGC Mesquite and CGC Sundew as Chief Engineer Office. I also served as The Group Engineer Officer for Group Duluth.

I retired in 1985 as the Chief Engineer on the CGC Morgenthau a High Endurance Cutter home ported in Alameda, CA. I then moved to San Diego, Ca. I took a position as a Ship Superintendent at a large Ship Builder. I was also the Machinery Area Manager on the Exxon Valdez. After five years I took a position as Warranty Engineer on new ships for a large shipbuilder in New Orleans. I stayed in San Diego as the West Coast Rep. After twelve years and many ships I went to work for a smaller shipyard in San Diego as a Program Manager.

I retired for good in 2004. I have been able to travel all over the world including eight trips through the Panama Canal and far into the Arctic. I sold my house in San Diego and moved to Las Cruces, NM. After being divorced for a number of years, through friends, family, and Facebook I reunited after forty seven years with my school sweetheart Elaine Ziemski (DCHS 63) We had attended the 61 prom together. In Nov 2009 we were married in Truth or Consequences, NM (thought it looked good on the license) and haven't been apart since. Elaine had a house in Fairhope, Also we have traveled back and forth. We have an RV and have been in twenty-two states in two years. We spent summer of 2009, 2010 in Duluth and look forward to summer of 2011 and the reunion. See you there!!!
