Memorial services were scheduled at 2 p.m. today at Lowell School for 1st Lt. Gary W. Hoglund, 24, Duluth, who was killed by mortar fire May 17 near Da Nang, Vietnam, where he was serving as a forward air controller with the Marine Corps.  A jet pilot who had flown more than 100 missions from the Chu Lai Air Base in Vietnam, Lt. Hoglund, son of Mr. and Mrs. Justa J. Hoglund, 611 Anderson Road, was a former pupil at Lowell School where his mother teaches third and fourth grade classes.  He was a 1961 graduate of Central High School where he was a champion swimmer.  He attended UMD and the University of Minnesota.  Lt. Hoglund joined the Marine Corps four and a half years ago.  He received his wings in Kingsville, Tex., in July, 1965, and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant.  He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in June, 1966, at Cherry Point, N.C.  He had been in Vietnam since September, 1966.  He received two air medals while serving with the Marine Fighter Attack Squadron at Chu Lai.  The latest, a Gold Star, was awarded in February "for heroic and meritorious achievement in aerial flight." The squadron was a unit of Marine Corps Aircraft Group 13, First Marine Aircraft Wing. A color guard from UMD's Air Force ROTC detachment was to attend the memorial service today, with Taps to be played by a Central student. 

Surviving besides his parents are his wife, Arnete, and his 16-month-old son, Troy, of Meridian, Miss; a brother, Richard, at home; a sister, Patricia, Brainerd; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mina Hoglund, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Wainio, both of Duluth.  Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church of which Lt. Hoglund was a member
