After high school, I spent five years on active duty in the Navy. I did two cruises off the coast of Viet Nam so now I am a veteran. Later, I served in the Naval Air Reserve for about five more years.

I met my wife, Alice, at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth and we were married on the coldest day of December, 1967. We raised four sons who were conceived on three different continents. The youngest was born in Pakistan. Our sons live in Seattle, Minneapolis, Singapore, and Kabul. We have two granddaughters and another grandchild waiting to be born in February.

I graduated from UMD in 1971 with an Industrial Arts teaching degree. Later I went back to school and got a diploma in Biblical Studies and, even later, a Masters degree in Special Education.

Although my main career was teaching, I worked at several other jobs such as jet mechanic, hospital orderly, farmhand, dispatcher, janitor, job coach, property manager, and school principal. I taught mostly shop classes, but also Special Ed., General Ed., and English (as a second language) at elementary, middle, high, and technical schools. My first teaching job was at an American school in Germany - then came Minnesota, Pakistan, Washington, and Wisconsin. I officially retired from Seattle Public Schools in 2005, but taught part-time in Wisconsin until I turned 66. In order to teach in Pakistan, I had to learn to speak their national language which is Urdu.

My wife and I now live on our 40-acre hobby farm near the south shore of Lake Superior and have a big garden and raise chickens. Last winter I spent 10 weeks in Goa, India, renovating a house that my son owns; I will return this year to do phase-two. The workers there speak four different languages that are all similar to Urdu so I am able to communicate with them. Fortunately, Alice will be able to spend a few weeks there with me. We have traveled in Europe, Scandinavia, South and East Asia, and are planning a trip to Israel for Easter 2011.
