Life & Times of Margaret Goewey ~
I was married one year to the day after high school graduation and that marriage produced my two fantastic sons. We lived in the Cities for most of that time and when the marriage ended, I returned to Duluth. I eventually re-married and with that marriage, raised 3 great step kids. History repeats itself and that marriage was done and gone.

I had a great job at A.W. Kuettel and Sons, build a wonderful little house in Saginaw and thought that was where I would finish up. Not to be the case. My boys decided to move to Portland, Oregon and go into business together. They actually had the nerve to take their children with them. Well, that just won't do, so Grandma put the "For Sale" sign in the yard, packed the U-Haul and hit the Oregon Trail. I've been here for 15 years now and still not used to the gray, rainy winters. Summers make up for it, with mountains, high desert and the beautiful Oregon coast all within driving distance. I've had a great time watching 6 Grandchildren grow up. Now there is one in college, 3 in high school and 2 in middle school.

I joined a Ski (social) club and have had some great adventures with them and met a really fun group of friends. They got me going on the travel thing and I only need two continents to complete my "world" travels. We've been to Europe, China, Egypt and around the Horn of South America. We're now planning a photo safari in Tanzania. Retirement hasn't been in the picture yet, but when the time comes, I will be returning to MN to spend my summers at the lake cabin and hopefully somewhere warm and sunny in the winter.
I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone next year!!

Margaret Ann Goewey passed away yesterday evening in her sleep May 1, 2017 about 5:45 in Portland, Oregon. She was surrounded by her family, Jeff and Jen and Bill and Karen (sons) and the deep love of so many of her friends and family in the form of cards and gifts and flowers that have been arriving in a steady stream. Her room was still decorated in purple streamers and balloons from her birthday celebration on Saturday and her hair was dyed a beautiful matching purple. She left many things un-done because there were so many things she wanted to do. She loved life and life loved her. She died in peace.

Her sons became business partners in 1995 in Portland Oregon, bringing all four of her grandsons, Jeremy, Christopher, Jason, and Nicholas Nootenboom, together on the west coast. The pull of family was too strong, so she pulled up stakes and moved to Portland, where she soon welcomed her granddaughters Kate and Julianne Nootenboom.

Oregon was the happiest period in her life because of her grandchildren. She went to every soccer game, music recital, track meet, cheer competition, football game, talent show and class play. Any activity where a grandma could show her pride. She spent time at her sons' mountain cabin and beach house at every opportunity. She had dinner once a week with each family, and somehow found time for line dancing, Bergfreunde trips to Lake Tahoe, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens, happy hours, movie nights with friends and world travel. She saw China, London, Paris, Egypt, South America. The woman had energy.

In 2013, she realized a long-term goal of retiring to Green Valley, Arizona, where of course she made a wide circle of friends. She spent her time line dancing, meeting new friends and enjoying every minute of her life. She spent her winters in Arizona, and would drive to Oregon to visit family in the spring, and then drive to the cabin in Minnesota for the summer, where she and Judy and Bob were rebuilding the cabin so it could hold more family.

She loved life, and was in no hurry to leave it. Diagnosed with lymphoma in June 2016, she fought it with humor, optimism, courage and hope. She lived her last few weeks exactly as she did her whole life: laughing and talking with friends and family. She died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her sons and daughters in law, and the love, support, flowers, balloons, cards and presents from friends and family far and wide. In accordance with her wishes, her remains have been cremated and her ashes will be spread near the cabin and all over the world by her beloved family. A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday July 1st at the Nelson funeral home in Cloquet, followed by a pot luck and weenie roast at the cabin.
