January 25, 1943 to October 18, 2002

Following graduation from DCHS, Dan joined the Navy and spent 2 years active duty at the Naval base in Pensacola, FL, followed by several years in the reserve. His duty in Pensacola included participation in space research projects, often serving as a research subject for the space astronauts. While in the Navy he attended night school and became a certified welder. He was discharged with special honors in 1963. Married Carleen Carlson (class of 1960) September 1962; one son, Joel 1971. They just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a two-week vacation in Hawaii that he planned.

Dan graduated from UMD with a degree in Industrial Education. Worked several years as a Boilermaker/Welder in construction, then joined the faculty at the Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College in Superior, WI where he ran and taught in the Welding program for 27 years. He was a dedicated teacher and well respected by students and his colleagues; retired in 2000. He was a member of Boilermaker's Union Local 647, American Welding Society, Park Point Community Club, First United Methodist Church and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Dan's life long passion was sailing Lake Superior and he realized his dream of owning his own sailboat and running sailing charters on the big lake. He owned "Sailing Incorporated" and the 35' Skipjack Ketch "Mariner"operating out of his home on Park Point. Since both Dan and Carleen were teachers they, along with their son Joel, had summers available for sailing charters, operated the service for 12 years. Following the period of chartering, sailing became for pleasure trips only and focused on all points of Lake Superior. The Apostle Island's National Seashore was the all time favorite.

His second passion was working with metal, he could build just about anything out of metal and he did. One look in his garage would tell the tale.

Dan died suddenly on October 18, 2002. He is greatly missed by his family and his many close friends. A scholarship for welding students was established in his memory and honor at WITC to recognize his work and dedication to the success of his students. In all aspects of life his personality never waivered, he always remained one great guy!!

Dan is preceded in death by his father William T. Maynard in 1981. Dan is survived by his wife, Carleen, son Joel, and mother Evelyn all of Park Point; brother Dean (Sandy) of Calif.; sister Jill (Lanny) DeMoss of Texas; sister-in-law Marilyn (Jerry) Skansgaard of Duluth; brother-in-law Randy Struck of Alaska, and Steve Struck of Chisholm; aunt Julie Schiller of Utah; several nieces and nephews and many very special friends and colleagues.
