I graduated from UMD in 1968, moved to Minneapolis, and married Jay in 1970. We bought a Volkswagen Squareback, picked it up in Luxembourg and spent the summer of 1972 traveling around Europe, sleeping in the back of the car most nights. Then we settled in, had 3 kids and lived in the same house in the Minneapolis area for 25 years. I was happy to be a stay-at-home mom. We spent 4 summers in our van and pop-up camper, showing the kids our country, also looking for a place to retire.
In 1998, after Jay retired from teaching English in Minneapolis, we came to the White Mountains of Arizona - where the weather is perfect (4 seasons, including snow, and blue skies most of the time). Since none of the kids were settled yet, we thought they'd follow us here - but they love Minnesota and are all still there. We get back to Minnesota 3 times a year so we can get our grandchild fix.
My avocation has been volunteering - at the kids' schools, at the church we attend, at our local hospital, at a crisis pregnancy center, reading to pre-schoolers at a day care center, and doing reading help with Apache schoolchildren on the reservation. I started walking 3 miles a day, 5 days a week in 1982 and figure when I'm 73 I'll have walked around the world. My favorite pastime is kayaking on the many lakes (believe it or not) in our area. We have been blessed.
