We (Rick Peterson) and myself dated a few times in high school and then we both went on to attend UMD after graduation. It was during our junior year in college that we began dating again and became engaged. We were married in July of 1965 - shortly after our graduation from UMD. Rick had majored in business administration and was hired by 3M Company that summer and assigned a sales territory in St. Louis, Missouri. So we left Duluth on a new adventure. It was the first time away from home for both of us. I had graduated with a BS degree and was fortunate to find a job in the St. Louis area teaching senior high home economics. Rick went on to work for 3M for 35 years where he had a very successful career and held many high level positions. He traveled extensively both here and abroad and I had the pleasure of traveling with him many times through the years.
My teaching career ended shortly after it began after the birth of our first child - a son. Another son arrived 14 months later and then another a few years after that. Rick now had his golf foursome! We moved around a lot (even lived in Canada for a few years) and eventually settled back in Minnesota in the Burnsville/Apple Valley area. I worked at some part time jobs during those years but most of all I loved being a stay at home mom with my sons and being involved with them and all their activities. Now we have 6 beautiful grandchildren (3 boys and 3 girls). I just attended my oldest granddaughter's high school graduation. Brought back so many fond memories of my own.

Now comes the hard part. Sadly, Rick was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease about 7 years ago. He retired from 3M in 2000 so we had just a few years to enjoy his retirement. All of our plans and dreams ceased to exist. Two years ago he moved into a care facility when I could no longer manage his cares myself. He was a great man and this is how I will always remember him. We had a wonderful life together.
