Gary Bowen, age 75, of Sandstone, passed away on 5/2/2018. Gary John Bowen was born on January 7, 1943 in Duluth, MN, to George and Virginia (Holappa) Bowen. He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1961, and was employed with Davidson Printing in Duluth before he was stationed in Germany while serving for the US Army. He married Barbara Mettner in 1968.

Gary worked at the Sandstone Federal Correctional Institution as a print shop foreman until he retired in 1993. He followed his passion for golf and helped develop the Sandstone Area Golf Course, which he managed for 10 years. He was also employed at Ace Hardware and Chris' Foods in Sandstone, MN. Gary loved golf, he also enjoyed fishing, singing and performing in plays, and making people laugh. He was a devoted member of the Sandstone Lions and a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gene, sisters Gayle and Geordis. Gary is survived by his wife of 50 years, Barbara; daughters Laurie (Wayne) Holm of Coon Rapids, MN; Sheila (Troy) Sigurdson of Buffalo, MN; Marcia (Mike) Horgen of Bristow, VA; 9 grandchildren: Brad, Brianna, Jessa, Jordan, Jayna, Christian, Hana, Mark and Angela; 5 brothers, 4 sisters, and many nieces and nephews.
