November 20th Monthly Meeting

SURPISE!!!  WE ARE GOING TO TRY A NEW VENUE

This months meeting of the Great Class of Duluth Central Class of 1961 will be held at:

Who: You and your spouse, friend, guest
What: Monthly Meeting of the Duluth Central Class of 1961
Where: PIKE LAKE GOLF AND BEACH CLUB (the old AAA Golf Club at Pike Lake)
When: Wednesday, November 20th, 2024 at 4:30 PM

We will be investigating a potential meeting location for our 2026 65th Reunion at the Pike Lake Golf and Beach Club and want to try it out ahead of time. Although we were considering having it at Sammy's, after last months meeting and the problems with acoustics, having the reunion there is out of the question. If you have other ideas, please share them.

Looking forward to seeing you there. We would like to further discuss our next 5 year reunion and invite your suggestion.

Dan Wagner Passed

Daniel John Wagner, age 81, was called to his eternal Home by a spectacular northern lights display on October 11, 2024 after a 7 year battle with cancer.

Born in Duluth, MN to parents Robert and Vienna Wagner, Dan enjoyed being a troublemaker with his older brother Russell but survived high school despite this, graduating from Duluth Central in 1961. He went on to graduate with a BS from UMD in 1965, a Specialist Degree from UW Superior in 1971, and a Post Graduate Policy Fellow in 1989 from the U of MN.

Dan met his future wife Linda while working for the State of Minnesota as an Employment Specialist, and joked he married her because he needed someone to pay off his many parking tickets. The two were married on November 2nd, 1968 and lived in Roseville and Duluth, MN for a short time before moving to Wisconsin.

While in Wisconsin, Dan served in a number of jobs but most notable was his time spent as District Director from 1978 - 1984 for Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (now Northwood Technical College). He and Linda raised two daughters in Fennimore and Rice Lake, and successfully resisted becoming Packers fans.

In 1984, the Wagner family moved to Roseville, MN and Dan's long career with the Minnesota State Education system began. He was an integral part of developing Minnesota's first online career office and Minnesota's Virtual University, both launching in 1994. Dan's proudest accomplishment was being a leader in establishing Minnesota's PSEO program. The Post-Secondary Enrollment Options program allows High School students to take coursework at participating colleges for free. This program has since been adopted by other states, and over 45,000 students earn college credits each year in MN through PSEO.

In 1999, Dan officially retired...only to immediately begin working again as a consultant for Minnesota State University. He continued in this capacity until 2018 when he retired for good, having been teased by his family for 19 years about "retiring."

Throughout his life, Dan enjoyed traveling with Linda and his daughters. The 4 of them visited many countries in Europe together, and even took a cruise to Cuba in 2018 along with other family members and friends! Dan and Linda also<

Sherman Moe Passed
Hi Ken:  I am sorry to report that Sherman (Sherm) Moe passed away yesterday 10/16/2024 in Tucson AZ.  He had been fighting prostate cancer for many years.  He was 87 years old.

Sherm came to D.C.H.S. in 1960.  He was a history teacher, B-team coach, and A-team Assistant Coach for our Basketball Team.  He had graduated from Moorhead State College.

I received the information from a close relative.  No other information was provided at this time.

FINAL 5 YEAR CLASS REUNION

Hi Folks,

At the last monthly meeting of the Duluth Central Class of 1961, we began to discuss our final 5 Year Class Reunion. The reunion will be held Wednesday August 19, 2026 (our normal 3rd Wednesday of the month) and would be an early afternoon (Like 1:00 or 2:00 pm). This would allow those close enough an opertunity to be able to drive here, enjoy the great social get-together and still be able to drive home in daylight hours.

The meal would be a low key all-you-can-eat luncheon at (Unknown Location) with vendor offering their smorgasbord which would give everyone options according to their dietary needs (this also gives us less up front planning of meal options). The venue would agreed to close the facility just for us until 6:00 pm and since it is on a Wednesday and not a weekend the costs would be lower. Being that it is two years off, they could not give an estimated price, however, since we do not have to pay for a venue and a caterer, the price will be very much lower than the last reunion. There will be no guest speaker or special presentation, just the camaraderie of us getting together for one last great Duluth Central Class of 1961, 5-Year Reunion.

For those wanting to stay over a second day or make a longer vacation event for themselves, Pat and I are willing to host a catered morning brunch at our home on Thursday August 20, 2026 at 11:00. This would be similar to the event we held at our last reunion. We are hoping to again have my grandson Captain Aiden available to provide paddleboat rides for those daring to venture out on our pond.

Just a note, we will never be stopping the monthly meetings, and all are welcome to attend any one of them. They are always the third Wednesday of each month, however stay tuned to the web site to be sure of what location we are going to have the meeting.

We are looking forward to your input and would appreciate any ideas you may have. Please contact us at:
